Disney Princesses on Ice Palace of Auburn Hills
Joe Jacobsen as Flynn and Kendra Moyle as Rapunzel in the "Tangled" portion of Disney on Ice presents Dare to Dream, Verizon Arena, April 24-28
Disney princesses Rapunzel, Tiana and Cinderella and their respective princes will feel a slight chill as scenes from their animated films (Tangled, The Princess and the Frog and Cinderella) take to the ice in Disney on Ice Presents Dare to Dream, Wednesday-Sunday at North Little Rock's Verizon Arena.
Kendra Moyle, who plays Rapunzel, faces a particular challenge: keeping her long tresses from getting entangled in her skates.
Her own hair, she says, "grows pretty long for the show, but I have a wig." How the wig and her own locks interact, she says coyly, involves "lots of Disney magic."
Also taking a lot of Disney magic: putting a life-size horse (named Maximus) on skates. So does the cirque-like aerial silk act she gets to do with on-ice partner Joe Jacobsen as unlikely prince-to-be Flynn.
Moyle, a prize-winning figure and pairs skater (she won the junior pairs title at the 2006 U.S. Championships and placed second in pairs at the 2006 World Junior Figure Skating Championships after winning bronze medals in juvenile national competitions), joined Feld Entertainment and the Disney on Ice operation almost two years ago. She's now on her second tour with the show.
"This is being called a U.S. tour, but we have visited a few cities in Canada and we spent part of last summer in Mexico," she says.
"We've been to a lot of cities on both tours that I wouldn't ordinarily have gotten to go to. I've seen a lot of cool things. Seattle and Vegas were winners for me."
And about a month ago Moyle, a native of Chelsea, Mich., in the suburbs of Ann Arbor, got to perform in front of hometown fans when the show visited Auburn Hills (the home of basketball's Detroit Pistons, though not hockey's Red Wings, who play on the ice of Detroit's Joe Louis Arena).
"My family and friends got to come," she says. "It was so much fun to play home."
She'd seen the animated movie, of course, but not until she'd been recruited to join the ice show. "The casting director had seen me skate at Nationals," she explains.
She'll leave the show when the current tour ends in mid-May, however.
"I'll be all done," she says. "It's bittersweet. I'm getting married in June and going back to school in the fall." She interrupted her studies to join the tour; she has about a year left toward a communications degree at Eastern Michigan University, and hopes eventually to earn a master's degree and become a school counselor.
"It's been quite a whirlwind," she says. "I'm happy I took the opportunity."Disney on Ice Presents Dare to Dream
